This is something you hear about daily, but do you know what it means and how much it will cost? What they are saying is that we should arrive at a state where the amount of CO 2 that we give off, should equal the amount absorbed. This is complete nonsense as there are so many unknowns. So, what does Net Zero mean in practice? 1 . All coal, oil and gas power stations should be phased out. 2 . All gas and oil heating should be phased out and replaced with electric heat pumps. 3 . All vehicles should be powered by electricity from on-board batteries, and all petrol and diesel powed vehicles should be phased out. 4 . All power generation would be from wind and solar sources. Nuclear would be better, but many ‘Green’ factions are against this. This would mean that all heating and power would come from the National Power Grid, which is not capable of supplying this sort of load. It is estimated that it would cost £60bn to upgrade the grid, but going by past estimates of major projects, it would cost at least 5 times that amount, plus the cost of building and maintaining a vast number of additional wind turbines and solar farms. The total cost would criple the country. Further more, even with all these extra wind turbines and solar panals, there would still be times when there wasn’t enough power to sustain the grid. Wind turbines have a limited life, and the maintenance and replacement costs would be enormous and ongoing. The extent of the distribution network would be horrendous. What we do is a matter of judgement; do we replace an imagined threat with a disaster?
