Atmosphere Blanket Effect There has been a lot of speculation as to what affect the atmosphere has on the average temperature of the Earth. People have postulated that it is the Greenhouse Effect that keeps us warm, however, if there is no Greenhouse Effect, as such, What keeps the temperature at a comfortable level? If there was no atmosphere, the surface of the Earth would rise to a temperature ot 120C during the day and drop to -133C at night. This is because all the heat energy arriving at the Earth’s surface all goes into heating just the surface layer of rock, which gets very hot. At night, this heat is quickly lost by radiation. If there is an atmosphere, the heat is quickly removed from the surface by convection and spread out throughout the atmosphere. This reduces the temperature, but at night, the heat is lost more slowly due to the greater mass holding the heat, and the lower temperature of the mass. There is no need for any ‘Greenhouse Effect’ for this to happen. Molecular Resonance It is the fact that CO2 has a molecular resonance in the middle of the low-frequency end of the infra-red spectrum. This is the spectrum curve that people use:- This shows the absorption of light and infra-red radiation by different molecules. You can see that H2O is by far the greatest absorber but CO2 appears to have quite wide bands of absorption. This is due to the fact that the measuring equipment used to produce this graph has a wide passband. The absorption band is actually very narrow as the molecular resonance has an extremely high ‘Q’. So, the radiation absorbed is actually at a single wavelength, not a wide band. This means that the amount of energy involved in this is a very small proportion of heat radiated. Further to this, there is only one molecule of CO2 to every 2500 molecules of other gasses. Also, it can be shown that more incoming heat is blocked than outgoing. This can be seen quite clearly when a cloud passes over the sun on a hot day; it suddenly feels cooler. It must be remembered that anything that blocks outgoing heat also blocks incoming heat from the sun. This is something that is completely ignored by scientists, the press, and everyone else who postulates a climate emergency.
